But what hasn’t changed is that every time I’ve made candy cane hearts with chocolate, the kids go completely bonkers with anticipation. I can’t tell you how many times I had to say ‘not yet’ when photographing these cuties. Learn how easy it is to create candy cane hearts, a perfect Valentine’s Day treat! Featuring colorful sprinkles, these candy cane hearts with white chocolate are a fun project to make with your kids. If you have ever wondered what to do with leftover candy canes, these treats are for you! When you are arranging the candy canes on your waxed paper, you might have to get creative with your matching. The most surprising part of making these was that when candy canes melt, they get stringy, kind of like cheese. I tried using a fork to press them together when they first came out of the oven, because I was worried about burning my fingers, but the fork just pushed right into the candy cane, and when I pulled it out, it brought tiny melted strings along with it. Melt both candy coatings in separate microwave-safe bowls, heating them in short bursts and stirring frequently to prevent overheating. If you want to intensify the peppermint flavor in this candy, add a drop or two of peppermint oil (not extract! Be sure that your flavoring is oil-based instead of water-based, so you don’t ruin your chocolate) to the chocolate during this step.

These DIY candy cane hearts come at the perfect time. If you have leftover candy canes from the holidays, now you can find a new use for them. But you can also use them for Christmas too. Before your chocolate sets, you’ll want to add sprinkles to the top. I used a combination of mini hearts and gold confetti sprinkles along with some red nonpareils. Arrange candy canes on a parchment covered baking sheet so that the ends are touching and create a loose heart shape. What if your candy canes are all broken? While the coating is still wet, top the bark with a generous sprinkle of candy cane pieces all over the top of the heart. Make sure that they are no sugar crystals on the side of the pan, by brushing them down with pastry brush dipped into hot water.Keep reading for all the tips we’ve learned from making these through the years, and to grab a special printable label to make your gift extra sweet. Repeat the same with the red mixture, only this time don’t pull for so long, otherwise the red becomes too opaque and gets little too light in colour. It’s okay if not every candy cane matches perfectly. Just move the candy canes around until you find two that make a pretty heart. 🔑 Key to Success #2 – Melt the Almond Bark and Stir Well

To make swirled bark, drop alternating spoonfuls of white and dark chocolate coating inside the candy cane heart. Again, you don’t have to fill the chocolate to the top of the heart, so a single layer of white and dark chocolate inside should be fine. Christmas sprinkles: red, white and green sprinkles look lovely on these, but you could use whatever festive sprinkles you like, or even some chopped-up candy canes. How to make candy cane hearts Once the joins have been pushed together, leave them to cool for 15 minutes. Once they are cool, tie ribbon around them and hang them on your tree. The whole pan goes in the refrigerator for a few minutes to set this up. I used this time to crush up some mini candy canes for the topping and melt the chocolate to fill the hearts.

Immediately after removing the candy from the oven, pinch any open ends together to create a closed heart shape. Spoon the chocolate into the hearts until they are full. Use your finger to even out the chocolate if you have to: There are two ways to melt chocolate for bark: double boiler or microwave. I used a double boiler to melt both the white and semi sweet chocolate for these peppermint bark hearts, but you can learn all you need to know about how to melt chocolate right here. Step 5: Add the chocolate to the inside of the candy cane heartsI’ve divided the mixture into two parts – one – large one for the white element of the candy cane and smaller one for the red stripes. Melt the white and semi-sweet chocolates (in separate bowls), using short intervals in the microwave, or in a double boiler. It’s a good thing we’re not doing classroom gifts this year, because I don’t think there would be any left to hand out. But if you can keep your kids away from them… We’re using white almond bark in this recipe because it melts well and the flavors complement the peppermint very well. Continue heating and stirring in 30-second increments until the almond bark is completely melted and smooth.
