This is an unusual statement from a Charismatic preacher. They typically use John 14:12 as their promise verse to perform greater works than Christ. John 14:12 says, "“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father."” Of course, Charismatics err in thinking this means miracles – instead it most likely refers to preaching the Gospel more and further than Christ ever did. This statement, then, is not bad or heretical in itself. But let’s get to the main point that Allen is purporting – that God spoke to him personally. Hebrews 1:1-2 says, "Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world." Does God still speak to men – to His prophets? Hebrews would say otherwise. God has spoken to us and STILL speaks to us through His Son and through His Word! If the words of the prophets are God’s words then they hold as much weight as Scripture and should be taken with that level of authority and gravity. But, as we shall see, they are not and the words of most prophets actually conflict with the actual Word of God!

The Union Generals are all incompetent with no thought given as to why at crucial moments McClennan and Burnside acted with such caution. By contrast all the Confederate leaders are lantern jawed men of dash and vigour, with a clear view of a battle and sustained by their faith in God. the pov - I enjoyed the different pov's, the deeper look into each character's thoughts and feelings. I am most impressed with the people who have the least flaws. The people who seemed to truly seek God's will in their life for the entire span of their lives — they ran with patience.

One of the reasons I’ve been reading this trilogy – starting with The Killer Angels – is to really be able to wrap my head around this war. I’ve always known that slavery was the root cause, but I couldn’t understand why the entire south would fight so HARD…. Just to keep slaves?? I mean, I can see why the wealthy southerners wanted to hang on to their free labor... But there had to be more to it. the humor - even though this is an overall serious book, there were still a few humorous parts, and I enjoyed those. He is best known for his God's Generals series of books: God's Generals: Why They Succeeded and Some Failed; God's Generals: The Roaring Reformers; God's Generals: The Revivalists; God's Generals: The Healing Evangelists; God's Generals: The Missionaries; and God's Generals: The Martyrs. I do like these Shaara books because they (father and son) narrate these events in story form. It’s definitely more up close and personal than your average war book or biography. He writes good dialogue, and places you inside the heads of these characters – such famous people as Robert E Lee and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.

Smith Wigglesworth was a very impressive fellow as well. His belief that "True faith confronts, and it is ignited by initiative" motivated him to achieve amazing acts. What to know

Evan Roberts was a strange man. He so sought to live in the Spirit that I see him as a man that was lost in a fog in this world. How bizarre was his relationship with Mrs. Jessie Penn-Lewis! Success brings them out of the woodwork. If only it were not for her, I wonder how Roberts' life would have differed. I too wonder if the dark poetry found upon his death in his notebook has ever been published. From age sixteen, he has utilized every platform to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, bring maturity to the church, and encourage those in ministry. He has produced radio, television, and Internet programs, and has also authored more than eighty books, which have been translated into over sixty languages and to date have sold 16.5 million copies. I liked some of the characters and understood their decisions regarding which side they supported: North or South. First, just look at his footnotes, according to my way of thinking he shows no real research. He uses only a handful of sources. When looking at the footnotes for each chapter the author seems to only use fawning works or resources that propagate the myths, he wishes to promote for each of the subjects.

Following the Lord Jesus seven days a week is a very good thing to do but unfortunately is not possible for any of us to accomplish completely and certainly cannot be a requirement to obtain blessings and power from God. Also, none of the disciples nor Paul nor any of the church fathers were able to accomplish this task – but Allen was? John G. Lake was one of the most impressive figures here, in my opinion. It is very sad what took place in Africa. Out of Africa... The first in the epic father/son Civil War trilogy (the next one is The Killer Angels by Jeff's father Michael Shaara, followed by Jeff's sequel The Last Full Measure). This was Jeff's first book, and it must have been intimidating writing a prequel to his father's book, which had won the Pulitzer prize and been made into the astonishingly good film, Gettysburg. This book was actually an amazing book! Getting to hear about the lives of these amazing revivalists was so cool! I think a major reason the author decided to write this book was that people tend to only hear about the miracles these people have done or how many people they were able to bring to christ instead of their full lives and the little details we miss out on. Well it turns out I'm not tough enough and this book wasn't worth it. Oh, and I'm totally giving up on us.Then there are 3 more books used by Liardon. One more from Gordan Lindsay, one from Wilford Reidt and one from Ken and Gloria Copeland. The problem with all these works is they present a fawning one-sided largely uncritical view of John G Lake. Again, no problem with these works per se. However, in my view they are nothing more than sycophantic hero worship of John G Lake. Wurm, Gerald. "Gods and Generals (Comparison: Original Version - Extended Director's Cut) - Movie-Censorship.com". www.movie-censorship.com . Retrieved February 2, 2021. For those who may not know, Jeff Shaara is the son of Michael Shaara who wrote The Killer Angels. Without that great book, there would be no Gods and Generals, or the many other books Jeff has written since this first one. Chamberlain walked toward them, stepped down off the surface of the road, and his feet slid suddenly away, slipped sideways into the depression that ran beside the road. He caught himself, one hand landing hard in the wetness, and Ames saw him. The other man said something, laughing, then rode away. (...) Chamberlain looked at Ames, said, "Just a clumsy fall, Colonel. These roads are a bit of a mess." The basic truths of the Protestant faith–the things you believe and base your life on–were not always accepted and readily taught. Roberts Liardon introduces you to six of God’s Generals who fought to reestablish the core beliefs and principles of the early church in the atmosphere of oppression, ignorance, and corruption that pervaded the medieval church. As you read about these roaring Reformers, men who sacrificed everything in their fight for God, you will appreciate the freedom you have to worship, find encouragement for your spiritual battles, and be motivated to find biblical truth in your own life.

Years after the release of Gettysburg, a second film about some pivotal battles in the American Civil War was released by the same production team that made the previous film. However, where Gettysburg was a successful film in capturing the pivotal battle, and had some standout performances to lend a human view to the slaughter taking place, this film almost entirely fails on all counts. And now my specific objections to the chapter concerning John G Lake. Again, look at the footnotes. According to the notations he relies heavily on John G Lake especially Lake’s book “Adventures in God” what is wrong with that you may ask. Nothing per se as that would be considered primary source material. But read on to my conclusion below.Good example of a disastrously romantic scene is on pg. 72 in which Lee's former slave, "Big" Nate, who is characterized by his large body, deep voice, and "dark, rugged face" speaks in dialect to try to convince his former master (the person who used to own him!) to release all his brethren. Quite a burden for the character and also quite unlikely historically. As you would expect of a book written from the viewpoint of the Generals the description is clinical and about troop movements. The actual carnage of one of the bloodiest wars in history is virtually forgotten. At one point the battle of Antietam, one of the bloodiest battles in US history is told from the viewpoint of someone held in reserve who saw none of the fighting! My Uncle, The late Reverend Boyd McClaren traveled with A.A. Allen and W.V. Grant. He was Allen's morning speaker. He eventually left Allen due to his drinking. It is my opinion that Liardon does not have very good information pertaining to Allen's drinking. He downplays it, making it seem to be mostly a conspiracy against his ministry. Allen had quite a ministry, whether he was a raging alcoholic or no. For those who are new, Gods and Generals starts at the beginning of the American Civil War and follows four of the major commanders through the first three years of the war. What makes this trilogy so unique is its even-handedness to both sides of the battle, which makes the war itself something tragic. Highly recommended series.
