Description

Max is a hedgehog who lives with his family in a nice little home, but it’s on the wrong side of the road from the park where there’s a beautiful lily pond and plenty of juicy slugs, worms, and snails!

Many of his stories are inspired by his farming experiences, the children he taught, his large family and numerous pets. There are not many pictures in the book, but the text engages the reader and is simplistic enough that younger children in Key Stage 1 would enjoy it if it was being read aloud to them. The length of this chapter-based story also means it is more suited to being an ongoing project children read over a number of weeks, with comprehension, reading with expression, retelling through writing and widening vocabulary being used at different stages as children progress through the book.

Still determined to fulfil his mission, Max discovers the best way to cross the road – with the help of the lollipop lady and some careful detective work . In this third lesson of this series, your class will learn how to make their report writing more exciting for the reader. The hero of this story is Max (full name: Victor Maximilian St George) a tenacious young hedgehog who sustains a bump to the head which causes him to mix up his words.

He is halfway across, but then the humans from the other side approach and he gets pushed around and is unable to get to the other side.Dick lived with his wife in a small 17th-century cottage, about three miles from the house where he was born. Max is a hedgehog who lives with his family in a nice little home, but it’s on the wrong side of the road from the Park where there’s a beautiful lily pond and plenty of juicy slugs, worms and snails! The use of illustrative vocabulary throughout the book can be used to develop children's own vocabulary in retelling the story and describing how the characters are feeling. Dick even presented and starred in several television shows during the '80's and '90's with his Dachshund sidekick Dodo. In the final lesson in this six-part series, your class will be writing non-chronological reports on hedgehogs, based on the plan they created in the previous lesson.

The story focusses on Max the "hodgeheg" who tries to devise a way in which hedgehogs can cross the road safely. This vocabulary and punctuation also allows for children to develop their understanding of how they can read with expression through roleplay and drama. The Hodgeheg is a children's book written by author Dick-King Smith, who specializes in animal books.

Max is helped by a Sparrowhawk who is my favourite character because he is kind and doesn't eat Max.
